If Light Novels Were Used On the SAT?

Argh. I hate standardized tests. Just thinking about how the SAT made me read a long boring passage and answer questions regarding the same stupid passage makes me want to puke.

So I have made my own standardized test, based off on the critical reading section of the SAT, by using a light novel for the passage.

Just in case for those who aren't familiar with the passage, it's Oreimo, AKA My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute
I'm looking at YOU, test taker.

Note: Oreimo is ADAPTED in this excerpt, so for those who know Oreimo, the passage will differ from the original.

Oh yeah, before I forget: I'll be making a series of tests/exams that are based on anime. Subjects include: Literature, Physics, Chemistry, History, Psychology, and a bunch of other junk that we all hate(d) in high school.

If you are familiar with the SAT Critical Reading Section, you will notice that the questions are identical with real CR questions. And probably some of you will challenge the questions and their choices. For those who do choose to challenge, leave a comment below with a solid explanation as to why the questions and answer choices are wrong, or something of that nature.

Stay tuned! I'll be making more of these tests!

Don't worry if nothing makes sense; at least you're smarter than our lovely Yui here

Answers:

    1. (B)

    2. (D)

    3. (C)

Explanations:

1.

(A) is wrong because the following sentence "I was a bit annoyed when that thought naturally entered my mind", indicates that Kyousuke's thought "God, no matter what she wears, she looks good in it" came across him without warrant, meaning that it was NOT deliberate, therefore cannot be sarcastic.

(B) is correct because the following sentence "I was a bit annoyed when that thought naturally entered my mind" suggests that Kyousuke spontaneously saw Kirino as attractive, which means subconscious attraction.

(C) is wrong because there is no indication of bitterness throughout the passage.

(D) is wrong because Kyousuke is certainly not detached of watching his little sister, as seen in "God, no matter what she wears, she looks good in it

(E) is wrong because there is no indication of Kyousuke deeply respecting Kirino.

2.

(A), (B), (C), and (E) are wrong because none of those fit the description of the "utterly amazing person": "She was tall but round in all the right places. That extremely stylish girl was my little sister Kirino Kousaka. She was a 14 years old middle school girl. She worked as a model for teen magazines, she was an ace of the track-and-field team, and her ranking on tests had her at fifth in the prefectur."

(D) most resembles the description of "utterly amazing person" compared to (A), (B), (C), and (E), therefore it is correct.

3.

(A) is a tempting answer for those who already know Kirino's character. However, the passage doesn't present Kirino being spoiled, ungrateful, nor disrespectful.

(B) is also tempting, but the passage shows nothing about on how Kirino views her older brother.

(C) is correct because working as a model, practicing track and field, maintaining academic excellence, and playing dating sims consume a lot of time and requires great time management.

(D) is almost an obligatory answer, for it is the ultimate cliche in anime/manga/light novels/visual novels that involve siblings. (Un)fortunately, the passage doesn't give any hints to justify (D).

(E) is also an obligatory answer, but just like (A), (B), and (D), the passage shows nothing that supports (E).

  1. It seems like a fun way to practice for SAT tests. While I didn’t get the anime reference, I did feel that it was an interesting way to practice for tests. I’m currently preparing for LSAT exams and have been regularly practicing LSAT Sample Questions. I too like to use external references to make my study routine interesting at times.
